Hands-On Learning: Splinting Workshop with Cassandra Chiesa
Hands-On Learning: Splinting Workshop with Cassandra Chiesa
Last week, 4th-year occupational therapy (OT) students at James Cook University (JCU) had an absolute blast participating in the splinting workshop led by Cassandra Chiesa, Co-Founder of Apricus Health, Occupational Therapist, and Accredited Hand Therapist. Cassandra, who teaches these lectures annually for JCU, guided students through an engaging two-day hand therapy elective filled with learning, laughter, and a little bit of unexpected excitement (more on that later!).
The students also included two of Apricus Health’s fantastic Therapy Assistants, who will officially start with us next year as new graduates.
Cassandra introduced the students to the field of hand therapy, sharing her expertise on the role of a hand therapist, the specialist training required, and leading a hands-on upper limb assessment workshop. The group also explored common upper limb conditions and learned when to refer clients to a hand therapist.
A standout moment of the workshop was the orthosis fabrication session, where students used low-temperature thermoplastic materials to create six custom splints. It felt like arts and crafts – but cooler and with a therapeutic edge!
Just to add a little extra excitement, a pipe burst in the lecture room during the workshop. But the students took it in their stride, quickly relocating and even moving to a different building to ensure the session could continue without disruption.
Overall, the workshop was an invaluable opportunity for students to upskill, whether they are considering specialising in hand therapy or want to feel more confident making referrals. With hands-on learning, creativity, and a touch of adventure, it was a memorable experience for everyone involved.
